Sarah J. Maas UK Tour

One of the best things about living in the UK is having a chance of meeting amazing authors that don’t go, for one reason or another, to Portugal. I’d had proof of it a year and a half back when meeting the brilliance that are Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch. Today, I was proven right yet again. That’s right, folks, I met the amazingness that is Sarah J. Maas.

Now if you’ve been following my blog or Goodreads for a while, you’ll have noticed that I hadn’t mentioned her name around here before, or at least not very much. The reason why was simple: I hadn’t read her books yet. I wanted to (everyone else I follow on the blogsphere loves Maas and I trust their taste), but I just didn’t have the time. Too many books, and all.

Then, I found out she was coming to town. Sure that I would regret it if I missed this chance once I read her, but unsure if I would like her writing, I decided to dive into Throne of Glass before the signing. To keep this from turning into gushing, let’s just say I read the book mostly while walking to and fro from work, and that I would get so engrossed that one or more of the following would happen every journey: a) tripping over something, b) squealing aloud , c) grinning like an idiot, d) mumbling to myself, or, the most common of all, e) bumping into every single tree branch that presented itself to my face. Before I knew it, I was rushing to get the rest of the books. And just like that I had the answer to my dilemma: I had to go to the signing.

And I did.

With a newly purchased copy of A Court of Thorns and Roses, I clung to the book like to a lifeline, I babbled and fangirled with two other Maas readers I met on the line, both of whom had come from other cities in the country. For an hour we waited anxiously, and an hour later, this happened:

Aaah! I know, right?

I had planned to tell her that little story I told you guys above, the one about the tree branches. My nerves, however, decided to keep me from remembering it. It’s alright. Not just because I met someone who is surely to sneak her way into my favourite authors list (just going to wait until I catch up on her novels to make it official), but because she is truly an absolutely wonderful person. She always had a kind word, or a topic to raise so that nobody was ever left uncomfortable or too star struck to speak.

Obviously, you can’t judge a person’s character fully by a two minute conversation, and yet she was so friendly, I cannot imagine her as anything but such. Even if she is my polar opposite on the Hogwarts Houses spectrum (she on the red and green, me on the blue and yellow). Just goes to show, everyone!

Besides, the signing only affirmed two of my personal beliefs: that geek ladies are a pleasure to be with, and that you can always find a friendly face in geeky events, even if you go alone. One of mine was Ewelina, a fellow book blogger, whom you can find right here.
